Printing Dynamic QR Codes: The Complete Production Workflow

Why dynamic is the printing decision, not the digital one

The moment a QR goes to a printing press, its content is frozen — unless the code is dynamic. A dynamic QR encodes a short redirect you control, so the plates, boxes, menus and hoardings you pay for keep pointing wherever you need, for years. The rule of thumb: anything printed more than ~100 times, or expected to outlive one campaign, gets a dynamic code before the artwork is approved. At ₹199/month or ₹999/year per QR, one avoided reprint pays for it many times over.

The production workflow

  • 1. Buy the Dynamic QR (₹199/mo or ₹999/yr on India QRCode) and create the code with its first destination.
  • 2. Brand it — colours, centre logo, caption frame ('Scan for menu') — high error correction is applied automatically with a logo.
  • 3. Download the PNG and place it in the artwork. Never stretch or skew; scale proportionally only.
  • 4. Size by the 10:1 rule — scanning distance ÷ 10: 2 cm on cards, 3–5 cm on tables, 10 cm on A4 posters, 50 cm+ on hoardings.
  • 5. Protect the quiet zone — the white margin is part of the code; brief your designer explicitly.
  • 6. Proof-test the actual print (not the screen) with three phones, one of them old, at the real distance and lighting.
  • 7. Approve the run — and note which physical placement each code serves in your dashboard's code name.

Material gotchas the press won't warn you about

  • Uncoated/cheap paper spreads ink and eats thin modules — go slightly bigger, square modules, pure black on white.
  • Gloss lamination glares under shop lights — choose matte.
  • Curved surfaces (bottles, cups) distort codes — keep them small and on the flattest arc, or print on caps and tags.
  • Dark backgrounds: never invert the code; put a white holding box behind it.
  • Outdoor fading: colours fade first — a black-on-white code outlives the design around it.

Life after printing

This is where dynamic earns its keep: swap destinations per season without touching the print, watch scan statistics per placement to learn which surfaces work, renew validity from the dashboard before it lapses (printed codes keep scanning either way — only editing locks), and when a campaign ends, repoint the code instead of retiring the print. Your ink becomes infrastructure.
