QR Code Print Size Guide: How Big, How Far, What Material

21 August 2026 · 5 min read · India QRCode team

The 10:1 rule decides everything

A QR code's minimum size follows one rule: scanning distance ÷ 10. A code scanned from 30 cm (a table tent) needs 3 cm; from 5 metres (a hoarding), 50 cm. Under-sized codes are the #1 reason 'my QR doesn't work' — the phone simply can't resolve the modules at that distance.

  • Visiting card (20–30 cm scan): 2 × 2 cm minimum
  • Table tent / counter card (30–50 cm): 3–5 cm
  • A4 poster (~1 m): 10 cm
  • Standee (2–3 m): 20–30 cm
  • Hoarding / banner (5 m+): 50 cm upwards — bigger is free insurance

Density: why dynamic codes print smaller

The more characters a QR encodes, the denser its module grid, and dense grids need bigger prints. A 300-character vCard is a thicket; a dynamic short link is a sparse, forgiving pattern. If your code must print small — jewellery tags, pen drives, spice sachets — use a dynamic QR so the encoded data stays tiny regardless of where it points.

Material and finish

  • Matte beats gloss: glare from laminated gloss is a real scan-killer under shop lighting — choose matte lamination.
  • Flat beats curved: on bottles and cups, keep the code small enough to sit on the 'flat-ish' arc, or print on the cap.
  • Contrast survives fading: outdoor prints fade — start with pure black on white and your code outlives the colours around it.
  • Never stretch: scale the QR proportionally; a squashed code is a dead code.

The pre-print checklist

  • Test the final artwork (not the screen preview) with three phones — one old Android among them.
  • Test at the real distance and lighting of deployment.
  • Check the quiet zone survived the designer — the white margin is mandatory.
  • Label the code ('Scan for menu') — unlabelled codes get 30–40% fewer scans.
  • If anything might change, make it dynamic BEFORE printing, not after.
