QR Code Scams in India: How They Work and How to Stay Safe
Why scammers love QR codes
A QR code is a link the human can't read. That opacity powers all QR fraud: the victim can't see where the code leads or what it does until after the scan. As UPI made scanning a daily habit for hundreds of millions of Indians, the same reflex became an attack surface.
The good news: every common QR scam collapses against two or three simple habits. Here's how each one works.
Scam 1: 'Scan to receive money'
The classic. A 'buyer' on OLX or a 'refund officer' on the phone says they're sending you money — just scan this QR and enter your UPI PIN to receive it. Reality: scanning a UPI QR and entering your PIN is how you PAY. Receiving money never requires scanning anything or entering a PIN. Anyone who says otherwise is stealing from you — hang up.
Scam 2: the sticker swap
Fraudsters paste their own payment QR over a shop's printed code — every customer 'paying the shop' pays the fraudster until someone notices. Merchants: laminate your code, glance at it daily, and confirm the payee name a customer sees matches your business. Customers: check the name shown in your UPI app before confirming — if 'Sharma General Store' shows as an unrelated personal name, stop.
Scam 3: quishing (QR phishing)
Codes on fake parking-fine notices, forged electricity-bill letters, or tampered posters lead to lookalike payment or login pages. The defence is the same as email phishing: after scanning, read the URL before you act. Genuine Indian payment flows happen inside your UPI app, not on a web page asking for card details.
Safety rules worth internalising
- Receiving money never needs your PIN. Ever.
- Read the payee name in the app before confirming any UPI payment.
- After scanning a link QR, check the domain before entering anything.
- Merchants: inspect your printed codes regularly; laminate them.
- Prefer QRs from platforms that show a branded, verifiable landing page over anonymous bare codes.
