QR Code Menus for Restaurants: Setup Guide & Best Practices

Hosted menu page vs PDF: pick right

There are two ways to put a menu behind a QR. A hosted menu page renders your sections and prices as a fast mobile page — instant to load, easy to edit item-by-item, readable on any screen. A PDF menu preserves your print design exactly but loads slower and forces pinch-zooming.

Our rule of thumb: hosted page for everyday dine-in ordering, PDF for elaborate multi-page menus where design is the brand (fine dining, bars with cocktail books). India QRCode supports both — the Menu type builds a hosted page in minutes; the PDF/Document type serves your designed file, and you can swap the file without reprinting.

Setup that takes an afternoon

Build the menu in your dashboard: sections (Starters, Mains, Breads, Desserts), items with ₹ prices, and a note line for taxes or timings. Download the QR with your restaurant's name on the frame and a 'Scan for menu' caption — an unlabelled QR gets ignored.

Print one per table (tent or corner sticker), one at the entrance for the queue, and one at the counter. Laminate everything; sauce happens.

The table-top trio

The highest-ROI move is pairing three QRs: menu (scan to order), UPI (scan to pay), and Google review (scan to rate us). Each removes one staff interruption. Some restaurants print all three on one tent with clear labels; others put menu+payment on the table and the review QR on the bill folder — the moment of highest goodwill.

Mistakes that kill QR menus

  • Dead codes: using a free-trial generator whose codes expire — diners meet an error page. Use codes you own.
  • PDF-only menus with 10 MB scans of print files — 20 seconds of loading on restaurant WiFi.
  • No fallback: keep a few printed menus for guests who prefer paper; a QR should add an option, not remove one.
  • Tiny codes: below 2.5 cm, phones struggle at arm's length. Bigger is better on tables.
  • Never updating: the whole point is live edits. Assign one person to keep prices current — it's a two-minute job.
