Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which Should You Use?

17 August 2026 · 5 min read · India QRCode team

The one-sentence difference

A static QR encodes your content directly in the pattern — it works forever, needs no service, and can never change. A dynamic QR encodes a short link that redirects to your content — the printed code stays identical while you change what's behind it, and every scan can be counted.

When static wins

Static is genuinely better when the content is small, permanent and should work offline: WiFi credentials, a vCard on a visiting card, a fixed UPI ID, a serial number. No dependency on any company's servers — including ours — means nothing can ever break it. Our generators make static codes free (just create a free account) precisely because they should be free.

When dynamic wins

Dynamic wins whenever ink outlives intent. Product packaging printed in lakhs. A campaign hoarding whose landing page will change. A menu that gets seasonal updates. An agency managing codes for clients who switch websites. In each case the maths is simple: reprinting costs more than the subscription, and flying blind on scans costs more than both.

Dynamic codes also stay visually simple. A static code gets denser as content grows — a long URL makes a hard-to-scan thicket. A dynamic code always encodes a short link, so it scans fast even printed small.

The 30-second decision

  • Will the destination ever change? → Dynamic.
  • Do you need scan counts, cities, devices? → Dynamic.
  • Printing more than 100 copies? → Dynamic (insurance on the ink).
  • Offline data like WiFi or a contact? → Static.
  • One-off, small, permanent? → Static, free, done.

Cost reality check

Static: ₹0 forever. Dynamic with India QRCode: first code free, then annual packages from ₹999 for 5 codes — about ₹17 per code per month, with branding, analytics and unlimited edits. If a reprint of your material costs more than that, the decision has made itself.
